Hat Standards/Body Protectors

Hat standards are updated and checked every year. The current BRC Rule Book lists the standards for the current year (page 36). You will not be permitted to compete if your hat does not meet the required standards. A little coloured tag is attached to your hat to show that it has been checked & passes the current standards, so you don't need to get it checked at every competition.

Body protector standards are also updated periodically.  A body protector of the required standard is compulsory for horse trials, arena eventing, and combined challenge, and is recommended for showjumping.

BRC Whip, Spurs, Gloves Rules

BRC have implemented the same rule as BS regarding whips & spurs. This is listed in the rule book and applies to Showjumping, Horse Trials, Combined Challenge, Combined Training and Arena Eventing. Only cushioned whips are allowed. The whip should never be used more than twice during an incident.
Spurs must only be used to enhance the normal leg aids and allow for better communication from rider to horse. Spurs must never be used to vent a rider's temper or to reprimand a horse. Misuse of the spur will render the rider liable to disqualification and further disciplinary action.  Spurs will not be permitted for any Intro dressage tests at Qualifiers or Championships.

Gloves no longer need to be worn for Dressage competitions.

Voice aids will be permitted in dressage with immediate effect.  Discreet vocalisation  to support natural riding aids, such as tongue clicking, is permitted. Use of voice must remain unobtrusive at all times and must not cause distraction or interference to other riders, horses, or officials.  Excessive or disruptive vocalisation may be subject to penalty at the discretion of the judges or event organisers.

BRC Vaccination Rules

Horses must be up-to-date with their vaccinations for equine influenza. They must not have been vaccinated in the 7 days prior to competing in a qualifier or championship.  See section G7 in the BRC rulebook for full rules. Any companion equines travelling with you must also follow the BRC vaccination rules, and have written permission before attending.
